Benefits for your dependants when you die

Your NHS pension scheme would provide a range of benefits for your dependants in the event of your death.

These can include:

  • a lump sum paid automatically to your spouse, registered civil partner or qualifying partner or to someone you've nominated to receive the benefit using a Death Grant Nomination Form.
  • dependants' pensions which are normally payable for life to your legal spouse, registered civil partner or qualifying partner from the date of your death although they may need to provide evidence to show they meet certain eligibility criteria.
