Find out more about how you can access an online calculator to provide you with an illustration on the impact of the 2015 Remedy on your pension entitlement.

Who is affected?

If you joined the NHS pension scheme on or before 31 March 2012 and you were still a member on or after 1 April 2015, then as long as you had continuous service you will be asked to make a choice about your pension scheme benefits once your pension scheme is set up to deliver the 2015 Remedy.

This includes members who left but returned within 5 years to the same or another public service pension scheme.

Can I have a retirement estimate?

Until secondary legislation is in place, expected to be after October 2023, SPPA can only provide pension estimates based on the current legislation. Estimates for retirement providing full remedy period benefits in either the legacy or CARE schemes will be available once legislation and software is in place in late 2023.

Online calculator

This online calculator can provide you with an illustration of the impact on the legacy and reformed scheme benefits to your pension entitlement.

To open the calculator, please ensure that you are using either Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.

This calculator is for guidance purposes and the outputs provided are illustrative only.

The calculator currently offers projections for those with 1995, 2008 and 2015 scheme membership. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the calculations, the modeller does not yet contain functionality for Mental Health Officers and Practitioner members of the scheme. It is also not equipped to provide illustrations for those who are in their scheme through the Choice exercise. We will provide an update on this page as soon as this functionality is available.

How will retired members be treated?

The UK government expects that the processes needed to support members to make their choice should be in place by 1 October 2023.  Members who retire before 1 October 2023 will have their benefits calculated on their current scheme entitlement. The SPPA will be in touch after 1 October 2023 to offer those members a choice to either keep their pension in payment or have the pension entitlement they built up in the remedy period recalculated under the alternative pension terms.  Any additional pension entitlement as a result of a pensioners choice will be backdated to the date they retired.

Members who retire on or after 1 October 2023 will be asked to choose either legacy scheme or reformed scheme pension benefits for service built up between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022. SPPA will provide members with information at the time to help inform their decision. Asking members to make this choice when they retire means they will know what they’re entitled to under each option, making it easier to make the right decision.

Using the calculator
